Swordtail Butterfly
Chorinea octavius (octavius swordtail) is a glass winged butterfly found in South America.
To stay hidden from predators, the long-tail glasswing butterfly relies on camouflage. Patterns of tiny bumps on the butterfly’s wings allow it to appear completely transparent.
It also reflects UV light, which may be a way for the butterflies to signal to mates while staying concealed from predators.
The heart is cut from copper and has numerous layers of enamel glass that is kiln fired at 800 degrees celsius. The butterfly is hand painted and fired several times to give a glossy finish. The setting is made from sterling silver and comes with a 45cm /18″ sterling chain.
The heart measures approx 23mm high x 24mm wide, the garnet gem measures 6 x 8mm.
