Lovers Eye Necklace – For You All Alone
“Lovers Eye” jewellery eventually morphed into “Tear” jewellery . Instead of the eye being that of a secret lover, the eye became that of a recently departed loved one. The pieces were often adorned with diamonds, pearls and other gemstones to represent tears. Sometimes the painted eyes would be looking downward to signify mourning.
I’ve added a garnet briolette to this piece to represent tears, and the heart reads “Pour Vous Tout Seul” which translates “For you all alone”.
The eye in this necklace has been hand painted in vitreous enamel and kiln fired at 800 degrees celsius. Vitreous enamel paint is made of finely ground up coloured glass which melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. The word comes from the Latin vitreum, meaning “glass”. The eye took several layers of paint with a firing in-between each one to gradually build up the final image.
The setting has been inspired by Georgian jewellery of the time and set with a 12mm garnet briolette gemstone. The necklace is made from sterling silver. the pendant measures 42mm long from the top of the heart to the bottom of the garnet and is 27mm wide.
